My project is to show the impact of war on ordinary people, and the unity thanks to which we continue the struggle. Its essence lies in the creation of collective portraits, in which the destinies of people, like their hands, are joined as a symbol of indomitability and strength that leads us all to victory. All this is thanks to the strength of spirit and love, support by the like-minded people and society, which has become united.

Looking for a compositional solution, I saw that the works form a visual series as a story, but one that has a certain cipher. A story that can be read like a text if you know the language. I felt an analogy with the Braille font and began to build a composition guided by the laws of its language. With the help of visual interpretation of Braille, I created composition “WE ARE FREE. МИ ВІЛЬНІ”. These are not just words, their true meaning lies behind each letter, for which there is a struggle today.

My personal experience of the year and a half of the war, as I stayed in Ukraine, allows me to approach the topic more deeply, I realized how fragile our everyday life is, on which everything is held. However, I see and feel the strength of people of Ukraine, and the information that I pass through myself is embodied in portraits. I am inspired by the photos and stories of those who have gone through the trials of war, loss or separation.

The most valuable are moments of meetings and departures at train stations, when families stand in each other's arms, creating a unified figure, in which there are many intertwined hands and hugs so strong that all the figures merge into one. This is both the happiness and the tragedy of our time. Just yesterday we perceived our loved ones as permanent, but today every minute is a treasure.

My work very organically moved into this plane, the visualization of unity, which fills with energy to fight for freedom. The strength in unity that I see in my family, friends, and other people, is the strength that united our society, made us those, who proudly says – we are Ukrainians. Today, Ukraine is extremely strong, I just found my own way to show this energy through artistic mediums, by means of which the message “WE ARE FREE. МИ ВІЛЬНІ” was born.

Iryna Vorona is an artist and researcher from Kyiv, author of the “mixed light” technique. She works in the genre of “inner portrait”, studying the manifestations of personality changes under the influence of the environment and society.
